For entering freshman with a strong foundation in math and chemistry, the department offers CHM 193 Honors General Chemistry I Lab. The Honors section of lab provides more challenging laboratory experiences for the students, building students' problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills while also developing their ability to write formal laboratory reports.
During one experiment in Fall 2014, Honors Gen Chem I lab students analyzes the Ca content in tap water using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, as shown in the pictures below.
The Honors students also participate in the department's community outreach program, Partners in Science. The Fall 2014 class has partnered with an 8th grade Physical Science class at Palmer Pillans Middle School. They will visit the class 4 times during the semester to conduct laboratory activities on Density, Conductivity of Solutions, pH of Solutions, and Atoms & Subatomic Particles.
