Portier Lecture

2016 Portier Lecture

"Queenship 101" presented by Dr. Charles Beem.

Monday, October 17, at 7:30, at Byrne Memorial Hall, Spring Hill College.

Charles Beem is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. A noted authority on Tudor Englad, Dr. Beem's talk will be based on his upcoming book, Queenship in Early Modern Europe.

The Portier Lecture is the annual history lecture, named in honor of Bishop Michael Portier, the first bishop of Mobile, who founded Spring Hill College in 1830.

Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb delivered the first Portier Lecture in 1980. The Portier Lecture usually alternates between an American historian and a European historian. Although the lecture is intended primarily for students and faculty, it is open to the public.
