Congratulations to the SHC Chemistry Club on their "Outstanding Student Chapter" Award from the American Chemical Society for 2013/2014!
Who Are We?
The SHC Chemistry Club is an all-inclusive and very active student organization at SHC! The club's mission is to promote the appreciation and study of chemistry in all areas of life. We are proud to be the largest and most engaged student club on campus, with members from all areas on campus, including students and faculty from the sciences and mathematics, history, psychology, political science, teacher education, and philosophy! Not only are we a campus club, we also reactivated our status as a Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society in 2008. Since that time, our Chapter has received national recognition from the ACS 4 times (please see Awards & Recognitions for more information).
Activities & Events
Regular Meetings: The Chemistry Club holds regular meetings every other week on ???? at ???? (TBA) in Room 103 of the Chemistry Building to discuss business and plan upcoming events. Please contact Nikki Kocher, the Club secretary, to be placed on the club's email list.
National Chemistry Week: The Club sponsors an annual week-long celebration in honor of National Chemistry Week, which always includes the day of October 23 (do you know why?!?!?!). During NCW, we plan and host events like a Karaoke/N2 (l) Ice Cream Party, Elemental Cupcakes in the Caf, Tie Dye Party, Movie Night, and Demolition Day!
How-To REU!: Each November, the Club sponsors a workshop for students interested in applying for summer Research Experience for Undergraduates programs. We discuss how to find REU programs, best practices when writing resumes and application essays, and requesting letters of reference from professors.
Crawfish Boil: Every spring, the Club hosts a Crawfish Boil where we cook up 400 lbs of fresh crawfish and spicy veggies. The Broussard family's authentic Cajun cooking makes this an event worth waiting for!
ACS Conferences: The Club helps sponsor students who have completed research to attend a regional or national meeting of the American Chemical Society each year to present their research. We also send a representative from the Club to network with other ACS Chapters and gain professional development for our Chapter.
Science Olympiad - The Club sponsors at least one event during the Regional Science Olympiad tournament held on campus each spring. In recent years, the club has officially run the Helicopters event, but club members have been heavily involved in many other events, like Forensics, Metric Mastery, Bungee Drop, Experimental Design, Chemistry Lab, and many others!
